In theory, standardised messaging formats such as FIX, FpML, and ACORD XML should make this exchange seamless. In practice, they often serve as containers for highly variable data. When counterparties disagree — even subtly — on what a data element means, downstream processes suffer. Regulators and consortia — including ISDA, SWIFT, and ACORD — have invested heavily in defining and promoting these frameworks. Each standard represents a collective aspiration for an industry that can process trades, policies, and claims with minimal friction.

Despite good intentions, implementation has been fragmented. Common barriers include:

  • Inconsistent interpretation: Each firm customises fields and validation logic, leading to divergent “dialects” of the same standard.

  • Legacy infrastructure: Core systems pre-dating modern standards resist easy integration.

  • Partial adoption: Standards are applied to some products or processes but not others, breaking end-to-end continuity.

  • Organisational silos: Compliance, operations, and IT departments often interpret data governance differently.

These barriers ensure that even when both parties claim to use the same standard, their data still “doesn’t match.”

  1. The Mixed Record of Success

Where standards are tightly enforced — such as in SWIFT messages for cross-border payments — automation has indeed reduced error. But in less regulated areas like structured products or delegated authority insurance, voluntary adherence produces inconsistent results.
The consequence is what some practitioners call false interoperability: the illusion of compatibility that masks hidden translation layers, mapping tables, and manual corrections.
